Building the Sanctuary
|
Like
so many Unitarian Universalist churches, fellowships and societies around the
world, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Little Rock, Arkansas provides a
religious center where diversity is cherished in the warmth of wholehearted
acceptance.
OUR GOALS
-
As
a warm and caring religious community, to provide a home for the heart.
-
As
an exercise ground for the intellect, to stimulate growth in understanding.
-
As
a launching platform for the spirit, to nurture the inner essence of our
humanity.
Founded
as a Unitarian fellowship in 1950, our church home has often served as a
catalyst for change in its community and state.
We are
proud that members of our congregation have been active in movements to end
capital punishment, protect the environment, reform our penal system, and
provide balanced curricula in our schools, among many others.
At the
same time, we join with others of all faiths in our community to share in
striving for the mutual benefit of humankind in a spirit of interfaith
cooperation. In short, we hope you find in the Unitarian Universalist Church
of Little Rock a haven of love, a forum to stimulate the intellect, and a
place to elevate the spirit.
Each
Sunday we light a chalice at the focal point of the Church sanctuary. And
throughout the week, that lamp draws together group after group to enjoy the
warmth it seems to generate.
People
come together here for worship... for lively discussions... for religious
education. We join to help sustain each other in a variety of support
groups. We participate in socials, dramas, classes in t'ai chi chuan,
dinners, business meetings, and many other purposes. But whenever we come
together, there is genuine enjoyment of the warmth of one another's company.
We find the Church a haven -- a place of peace and calm and aesthetic
pleasure -- that generates a sense of acceptance and community. And we find
openness and acceptance of differing sexual orientations, ethnic, and
religious backgrounds.
Little
Rock Unitarian Universalists take seriously the poem by Edwin Markham that is
printed in each edition of the church newsletter, The
Outer Circle:
|
He
drew a circle that shut me out -
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win -
We drew a circle that took him in.

OPEN HEARTS AND MINDS
As
much as Little Rock UUs enjoy religious expression, we enjoy the intellectual
stimulation we find in our church home. Religious and ethical
discussions, book study groups, forums, lectures, debates, and a variety of
other intellectually stimulating activities are as much a part of our church
life as are our worship activities.
Our
membership seems always to seek greater knowledge across the widest possible
spectrum, not only of religious subjects and contexts but also of academic,
scientific, ethical, social and other themes.
Unitarian
Universalism is a liberal faith which draws on the truths of the world's
great religions. We are bound by no statement of belief, and our members tend
to keep open minds in a continuing quest for their own religious and spiritual
truths.
Without
strictures on our religious beliefs or our spiritual expressions, the Little
Rock Unitarian Universalist Church serves as a launch pad for each
individual's quest for religious meaning and spiritual growth. We celebrate
the unfolding truths known to teachers, prophets, masters, and to people from
throughout the ages.
Our
members and friends mutually affirm the intrinsic worth of one another and
encourage us to think for ourselves. Believing that ethical living is the
highest witness of religion, we seek together to act as a moral force in our
community.
Newcomers
can easily become involved in church
activities, programs, and committees. Whatever your interests and your
persuasions, you will find many ways to connect with others and to bring your
energies to join ours.
Please
fill in a visitor's card in the foyer and sign up to be placed on the mailing
list for The Outer Circle, our monthly
newsletter. Feel free to pick up information brochures from the pamphlet rack
or visitors' table. Plan to attend some upcoming events and classes.
Our
settled minister is Rev. Bob Klein, you may contact
him via e-mail at
uurevbobk@sbcglobal.net
or minister@uuclr.org.
Membership
in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Little Rock is open to anyone, and is
accomplished simply by signing the membership book and by making an identifiable
contribution to the Church. This contribution generally includes an annual
pledge of monetary support for the Church. If you have questions about
membership, please contact a member of the membership committee at membership@uuclr.org.
Membership
is not to be entered upon lightly, as members are asked to commit their
financial support and their energies to sustain and enhance their church
community. But you'll find membership to be an investment with high returns
for the richness of life.
