Position Summary

The Music Director oversees the music program of the church and provides music for worship, rites of passage, and other church events. The Music Director is responsible for working with the Minister to develop high quality, diverse solo, vocal, ensemble, and congregational music programming that is consistent with our Unitarian Universalist tradition.

This is a 10 hour per week position.

Responsibilities

As an integral part of the worship team, the Music Director will:

• Oversee the music program to ensure it includes a wide variety of music for services, and in consultation with the minister and the pianist, ensure it is informed by the monthly themes and Unitarian Universalist thought and practice.
• Organize and conduct the choir.
• Provide accompaniment and special music either personally or by engaging other musicians and supervising their performance.
• Lead the planning and goal setting for the Music Program and be accountable for the program budget.

Expectations

• Schedule and select music for choir performances at Sunday services. Direct choir for service music and anthems, and direct weekly and special rehearsals.
• In coordination with the Minister and the Worship Arts Team, plan appropriate music components for multi-platform worship services, including service music, anthems, congregational singing, guest musicians, and soloists.
• Plan music for special worship events and services, such as Christmas Eve.
• Recruit choir members and identify and utilize congregational talent in vocal and instrumental music.
• Be responsible for expenditures from the annual Music budget.
• Supervise and maintain the music library, piano, and any other instruments available.
• Communicate music program events, opportunities, and vision with the congregation regularly.
• Ensure the church is properly licensed for all music performed, both in person and streamed.
• Adhere to music license reporting requirements.

Skills and Experience

The Music Director should possess:

• A degree in the field of Music, or commensurate experience.
• Sympathy with Unitarian Universalist principles and values.
• Musicianship and proficiency as an instrumentalist and choir director, as well as in leading congregational singing.
• Understanding and appreciation for a diversity of musical styles and traditions to support and provide diverse and eclectic musical offerings.
• A willingness and capacity to work collaboratively with the Minister and Worship Arts Team.
• Excellent interpersonal or “people skills.”
• Knowledge and experience in recording and producing music videos is a plus.

Compensation and Application

Total compensation is $12,000 per year.
